Overview
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium found in soil, water, plants, and many moist habitats that is a common opportunistic pathogen in humans, particularly those with weakened immune systems. It causes a broad range of infections, from wound and burn infections to pneumonia and bloodstream infections, and is frequently encountered in hospitals owing to its antibiotic resistance. In the context of anaesthesia and perioperative care, this organism matters because surgical patients, those in intensive care, and individuals requiring invasive devices such as catheters and ventilators are at heightened risk of acquiring it. Its ability to colonise equipment, form biofilms, and resist multiple antibiotics complicates the prevention and treatment of perioperative and hospital-acquired infection. Key research themes include antimicrobial resistance, novel antibacterial agents, biofilm formation, and infection control. This journal publishes work touching on several of these aspects, including the synthesis and testing of antibacterial complexes, the antimicrobial activity of plant extracts, situational analyses of antimicrobial resistance, bacteriological assessment of water and clinical samples, and complications associated with infected implanted devices such as stents.
