Overview

Amino acid metabolism is the process by which biological organisms break down and synthesize amino acids, which are the basic building blocks of proteins. Amino acids are essential in humans, as they are the major nitrogen-containing molecules and the main source of cellular energy, and are also involved in many metabolic pathways, including the production of proteins, hormones, and enzymes. The study of amino acid metabolism is important because it is fundamental for understanding how proteins are synthesized and how genetic mutations can lead to diseases.
