Overview
Implantation refers to the surgical placement of a device, graft, or biomaterial into the body, and in reproductive biology to the embedding of an embryo into the uterine lining. In the context of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, implantation encompasses the introduction of scaffolds, meshes, and engineered constructs designed to repair or replace damaged tissue. Research in this area includes the implantation of materials such as titanium nickelide mesh and calcium orthophosphate scaffolds for bone tissue repair and engineering, the use of engineered tissues in laryngeal reconstruction, and the reinforcement of the abdominal wall with synthetic mesh. The integration of implanted materials with host tissue, examined through microscopy and microanalysis, determines their success and biocompatibility. In its reproductive sense, implantation involves the molecular signalling that prepares the endometrium for embryo attachment, including hormone-driven decidualisation and uterine receptivity, and is influenced by oocyte quality and ovarian stimulation protocols in assisted reproduction. Xenotransplantation models extend the study of cell and tissue engraftment. Research in this area examines the design and integration of implanted devices and engineered tissues for reconstruction and repair, and the biological processes governing embryo implantation and uterine receptivity, spanning biomaterials science, regenerative medicine, and reproductive biology.
