Overview
The small intestine is the long, convoluted segment of the gastrointestinal tract situated between the stomach and the large intestine, comprising the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. It is the principal site of chemical digestion and nutrient absorption, where pancreatic enzymes and bile, together with enzymes of the intestinal brush border, complete the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and where the resulting nutrients, along with water and electrolytes, are absorbed across a mucosa vastly amplified by circular folds, villi, and microvilli. The small intestine also functions as an endocrine and immune organ, secreting regulatory hormones and housing extensive gut-associated lymphoid tissue, and it harbors a microbial community whose balance influences health. Disorders of the small intestine include malabsorption, inflammatory and infectious conditions such as Crohn's disease, bacterial overgrowth, congenital malrotation, and the consequences of bariatric surgery and intestinal injury. Themes in the associated literature include the causes and consequences of small-intestinal bacterial overgrowth, surgical correction of digestive-system reflux, the histomorphological effects of plant extracts on the intestines and stomach, MR-enterography in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease, nutritional deficiencies following obesity surgery, the effects of mesenchymal stem cells on intestinal injury, and intestinal targeting in oral drug delivery. Related work addresses probiotic modulation of intestinal inflammation. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research on small-intestinal structure, function, and disease.
