Overview
Management of side effects of malignant diseases concerns the prevention, recognition, and treatment of the adverse consequences of cancer and its therapies, a domain often termed supportive or palliative oncology that aims to preserve function and quality of life throughout treatment. The side effects addressed arise both from the malignancy itself, such as the metabolic and systemic effects of hematological cancers and the complications of tumor burden, and from the treatments used, including chemotherapy, targeted agents, radiotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Characteristic problems include hematological toxicity and cytopenias, immune-mediated complications such as immune thrombocytopenia following allogeneic stem cell transplantation, dermatological toxicity from agents like hydroxyurea, and the broad effects of conditions such as leukemia and lymphoma on patient well-being. Effective management relies on accurate diagnosis, for example cytological and laboratory assessment of lymphoid lesions and disease activity, anticipation of expected toxicities, and tailored interventions ranging from supportive medication and transfusion to modification of therapy and treatment of specific complications. Integrating symptom control, prophylaxis, and management of treatment-related morbidity with disease-directed therapy is essential, because reducing the burden of side effects improves tolerance of treatment, adherence, and overall outcomes for patients with malignant disease.
