Overview
Umbilical cord stem cells are stem and progenitor cells obtained from the umbilical cord and its blood at birth, representing an accessible, ethically uncomplicated source of cells for regenerative medicine and research. They include haematopoietic stem cells from cord blood, used in transplantation for blood and immune disorders, and mesenchymal stem cells derived from cord tissue compartments such as Wharton's jelly. Because they are collected from tissue ordinarily discarded after delivery, their procurement avoids the harvesting risks and ethical concerns associated with some other stem cell sources. Mesenchymal stem cells from the umbilical cord are multipotent, capable of differentiating along several lineages and of secreting factors that modulate inflammation and support tissue repair. Investigations explore their differentiation toward specialized cell types, including odontoblasts produced under good-manufacturing-practice conditions, and their broader therapeutic potential alongside mesenchymal cells from other tissues such as adipose. Research interest spans applications in tissue engineering, immunomodulation, and regenerative approaches to conditions ranging from organ injury to ovarian aging and infection-related complications, set within ongoing discussion of the ethics governing stem cell research and therapy. Their proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and ease of banking make them a continuing focus of cell-based therapeutic development.
