Overview
Free energy is a thermodynamic state function quantifying the maximum work obtainable from a system at constant temperature, with the portion of internal energy available to do useful work after accounting for entropy. Two principal formulations are used: the Gibbs free energy, defined at constant temperature and pressure and central to chemistry and biochemistry, and the Helmholtz free energy, defined at constant temperature and volume. A negative change in Gibbs free energy identifies a spontaneous process, making the quantity a key predictor of reaction direction, chemical equilibrium, and molecular binding affinity; it governs phenomena from protein folding to ligand-receptor interactions and is widely computed in molecular modeling and docking studies. In the energy-systems sense, the term is also used loosely for energy harvested from ambient renewable sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal, which carry no fuel cost once captured. Research in adjacent areas applies computational thermodynamics to molecular structure, binding, and stability, including spectroscopy and docking analyses of candidate compounds. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across the physical, chemical, and energy sciences in which free energy and related thermodynamic principles inform the understanding of spontaneity, molecular interactions, and the efficient capture and conversion of energy from sustainable sources.
