Overview

Mood disorders are a category of psychiatric conditions defined by sustained, pervasive disturbances of emotional state that impair functioning. They include major depressive disorder, characterized by persistent low mood and loss of interest; bipolar disorder, marked by alternating episodes of depression and mania or hypomania; and persistent depressive disorder, or dysthymia. Core features extend beyond mood to disturbances of sleep, energy, appetite, concentration, and psychomotor activity, and the disorders carry substantial morbidity and elevated risk of suicide. Their etiology is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, neurobiological and neuroendocrine dysregulation, and psychosocial stressors, and management combines pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions tailored to diagnosis and severity. Research relevant to this area examines combined therapy for depressed patients with comorbid pain, psychosocial interventions in bipolar disorder, treatment of anxiety, photobiomodulation for depression and anxiety, music therapy and mood in caregivers and care staff, mind-body and psychosomatic perspectives, and mental health in the context of broader stressors. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on the diagnosis, neurobiology, psychosocial determinants, and treatment of depressive and bipolar disorders and related disturbances of mood, including pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and integrative approaches.
