Overview

The immune system is the integrated network of cells, tissues, soluble mediators, and lymphoid organs that protects the body against pathogens, neutralises toxins, and maintains tissue homeostasis. It comprises two interdependent arms: innate immunity, providing rapid, non-specific defence through barriers, phagocytes, natural killer cells, complement, interferons, and pattern-recognition signalling; and adaptive immunity, providing antigen-specific responses mediated by T-lymphocytes and by antibody-producing B-lymphocytes, with immunological memory underpinning durable protection and vaccination. Balanced regulation is essential, since deficient responses permit infection and malignancy while dysregulated or excessive responses drive autoimmunity, allergy, and chronic inflammation. Its function is central to ageing, infectious disease, cancer surveillance, and the action of immunomodulatory therapeutics. The research collected here spans diverse facets of immunity, including frailty and immune decline with age, immunological effects of interventions in HIV-seropositive individuals, the application of immunoglobulins and immune responses in therapeutic development, the use of interferon-gamma and other immune modulators during the COVID-19 pandemic, immunoassays and immunogenomic approaches for monitoring cancer and infectious diseases, laboratory diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia, and dietary and lectin-based modulation of infection risk. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on immune mechanisms, immunomonitoring, and immune-targeted interventions across infectious, oncological, and inflammatory conditions.
