Overview
Cell division is the process by which a parent cell partitions its replicated genetic material and cytoplasm to produce daughter cells, providing the basis for growth, tissue renewal, and reproduction. In eukaryotes it occurs through two principal programs. Mitosis, preceded by DNA replication in S phase, distributes a complete, identical chromosome set to each of two daughter cells and underlies somatic growth and repair; meiosis comprises two successive divisions that halve the chromosome number to generate haploid gametes, introducing genetic diversity through recombination and independent assortment. Progression is governed by the cell cycle and its checkpoints, regulated by cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases, and tumor-suppressor and telomere-maintenance pathways, whose dysregulation can drive uncontrolled proliferation and cancer. Research in related molecular and cellular biology examines transcription-factor control of thyroid cancer cell proliferation, telomerase function and cellular aging, gene alterations in tumor formation, mechanisms of sporadic carcinogenesis, and proteomic responses to targeted therapy, alongside studies of proliferation in plant cell-culture systems. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in cell and molecular biology, oncology, and genetics in which the regulation of cell division, the cell cycle, and proliferation is examined, reflecting the central importance of controlled cell division to development, homeostasis, and disease.
