Overview
Medicine is the science and practice of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease and of maintaining and restoring health, encompassing clinical care, biomedical research, and the application of knowledge from the basic sciences to patient care. It integrates anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pathology with clinical reasoning across a wide range of specialties and care settings. The breadth of the field is reflected in work spanning traditional and emerging therapeutic approaches, including the nanomedicinal characterization of Ayurvedic preparations, the ethics and promise of stem-cell and regenerative medicine, and the relationship of basic sciences to clinical practice. Research also addresses the management of common and complex conditions, such as hypertension and the role of exercise medicine, heart failure in primary and family practice, and the care of severe pediatric illness in emergency settings. Practical dimensions of medical practice feature prominently, including methods to improve patient compliance, research methodology in general medicine, and the foundations linking human anatomy to clinical and surgical care. Applications of biotechnology to medicine and the integration of preventive and continuing education further illustrate the field's scope. As both a body of knowledge and an applied discipline, medicine seeks to understand the mechanisms of health and disease, to deliver evidence-based and patient-centered care, and to advance prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across the human lifespan.
