Overview

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive substance use or engagement in rewarding behaviors despite harmful consequences, driven by impaired impulse control and altered motivation. It encompasses substance use disorders involving alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, as well as behavioral addictions such as problematic internet and gaming use. The neurobiology of addiction centers on dysregulation of dopaminergic reward circuitry and prefrontal control systems, with adaptations that promote craving, tolerance, and loss of control; experimental work in dopaminergic neuronal models and on neuromodulatory hypotheses of drug dependence probes these mechanisms. Research in this area spans tobacco and alcohol as risk factors for disease, including their role in head and neck cancer and oral microbial changes among drug users, smoking cessation and self-efficacy, and the impact of smoking bans on youth. Psychosocial and developmental dimensions are addressed through studies of high-risk adolescents, acceptance and commitment therapy in online contexts, and mental health promotion. Related work examines substance use among populations affected by HIV and the broader public health framing of dependence. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the mechanisms, risk factors, prevention, and treatment of addictive disorders across clinical and population settings.
