Conversion of biomass to monosaccharides is a key requirement for the efficient biosynthesis of biofuels. The number of published descriptions of purified and characterized enzymes that are active on biomass is limited for a number of reasons. Many of these enzymes are present in only a small fraction of cultured and metagenomic organisms. Cloning and expression of these enzymes often results in low level expression or no expression. In addition, many of the substrates needed for characterization of biomass-degrading enzymes are too expensive or too insoluble for detailed kinetic and mechanistic studies. The results of these problems are that many enzymes remain undescribed in the literature.

A recent and well-accepted addition to the literature is the addition of Genome Reports in the field of microbial genome sequencing. These one to two-page articles report the basic results of sequencing allowing researchers to find and utilize the data from the sequencing of organisms. This journal issue will utilize the same basic concept for reporting enzyme results. The requested papers will present the source, sequence, cloning (if done), purification, basic properties, and potential applications of the enzyme.
